SEPI was contracted by the US Air Force to perform an Airfield Obstruction Survey, to assistwith the ongoing airfield planning project. The purpose of this survey was to identify, document, and map (horizontally and vertically) all items that protrude above the operational surfaces (runways, taxiways, etc.). Working with equipment operators from Earl Dudley and Associates, SEPI utilized the Topcon IP-S2 mobile scanning unit to perform the survey, which captured point cloud data and spherical photographs used in the postprocessing of the scan. This method enabled SEPI to collect survey grade data over a vast area (30 miles) in an extremely short amount of time. Due to airfield operations and security measures, site access and permission to operate the high tech equipment required extensive coordination with various security divisions at the airfield.
